Banyak berita keluhan masyarakat terhadap layanan SMS premium berlangganan atau yang sering disebut REG yang sering mengakibatkan pulsa handphone tersedot habis. Seorang teman bahkan harus mengganti Kartu SIM-nya gara-gara tiap kali di isi ulang, selang beberapa waktu langsung habis. Jika Anda mengalami hal tersebut maka untuk mencegah serta menghadapi pelanggaran yang dilakukan oleh Content Provider (CP) nakal yang memanfaatkan layanan tersebut, ada baiknya anda perhatikan beberapa tips berikut.
1. Disarankan untuk tidak menggunakan secara bersama-sama satu nomor seluler. Misalnya satu keluarga hanya memiliki sebuah HP dan digunakan secara bergantian oleh beberapa anggota keluarga. Dari fakta yang ada, banyak laporan yang masuk baik ke CP, Operator, maupun BRTI (Badan Regulasi Telekomunikasi Indonesia), pengguna tidak pernah merasa mendaftarkan nomornya ke layanan yang bersangkutan, padahal pada kenyataannya, tampak jelas bahwa pengguna tersebut benar-benar pernah mengirimkan perintah berlangganan ke layanan tersebut. Setelah ditelusuri, ternyata nomor tersebut memang nomor bersama yang digunakan oleh beberapa anggota keluarga.
2. Apabila tidak dapat dihindari penggunaan secara bersama nomor tersebut, selalu pastikan untuk memeriksa semua pesan yang terkirim di directory SENT. Dan pastikan bahwa anda mengetahui seandainya ada perintah untuk berlangganan, dikirim ke nomor berapa pesan tadi. Pesan berlangganan diawali dengan awalan perintah REG. Catat baik-baik perintah tersebut beserta nomor tujuannya. Ini bakal memudahkan pelacakan dikemudian hari.
3. Sebelum mulai berlangganan layanan, pastikan di setiap promosi yang disajikan oleh CP terdapat pemberitahuan yang JELAS bagaimana cara untuk berhenti berlangganan maupun nomor customer service-nya (pastikan nomor ini aktif). Jika tidak, jangan berlangganan layanan tersebut.
4. Cari tahu dengan cermat informasi berapa lama rentang waktu pengiriman satu SMS ke SMS berikutnya. Juga ketahui pula berapa tarif per SMS-nya. Dengan informasi ini, anda dapat mengkalkulasi berapa biaya yang akan anda keluarkan per minggu, atau per bulan. Jika anda ragu, sebaiknya jangan berlangganan.
5. Catat dengan cermat nomor short code misalnya 6789, 1234 dan sebagainya yang menjadi tujuan SMS berlangganan anda.
6. Catat pula pesan apa yang anda ketikkan ke CP tersebut. Disarankan untuk menyimpan setiap detil SMS tersebut dalam HP anda dan jangan pernah menghapusnya sampai anda yakin bahwa anda tidak membutuhkan lagi data tersebut. Beberapa HP memiliki fasilitas penyimpanan pesan yang dikirim dalam bentuk draft, manfaatkan fasilitas ini.
7. Ketika anda telah mendapatkan reply yang memberitahukan bahwa nomor anda telah terdaftar dalam layanan berlangganan tersebut. Pastikan lagi apakah cara berhenti berlangganan yang ditampilkan dalam promosi pihak CP dapat berjalan dengan sempurna. Umumnya untuk berhenti berlangganan, pengguna dapat mengetikkan pesan UNREG yang diikuti dengan spasi dan jenis layanan berlangganan yang telah didaftarkannya tadi.
8. Untuk memastikan apakah anda telah benar-benar terbebas dari layanan tersebut anda perlu menunggunya dalam 1-7 hari. Hal ini terjadi karena kemungkinan pengiriman pesan SMS berlangganan tersebut tidak dilakukan setiap hari namun beberapa layanan bahkan dilakukan dalam periode mingguan.
9. Ketika anda merasa ada sebuah pesan yang tidak diinginkan secara rutin terkirim ke HP anda pada waktu tertentu misalnya setiap hari jam 10 pagi, kemungkinan itu adalah layanan REG yang secara sadar maupun tidak pernah anda daftarkan sebelumnya. Beberapa SMS tak akan terkirim ke HP anda jika anda mematikan HP pada jam-jam tersebut. Namun cara ini tidaklah efektif dan akan mengganggu anda seumur hidup. Pastikan pula berapa pulsa anda terpotong setiap kali menerima SMS tersebut
Umumnya untuk berhenti berlangganan, pengguna dapat mengetikkan pesan UNREG yang diikuti dengan spasi dan jenis layanan berlangganan yang telah didaftarkannya

Ketika sebuah SMS yang terindikasi sebagai SMS REG mampir di HP anda, dan anda tidak tahu layanan apa yang sedang dikirimkan, langkah pertama yang harus anda lakukan adalah mencatat nomor pengirim SMS tersebut. Nomor pengirim dari CP dikenali dari jumlah digit-nya yaitu 4 digit atau 6 digit. Apabila yang anda peroleh adalah nomor 6 digit misalnya ABCDEF, maka CP yang sedang mengirimkan Pesan kepada anda adalah CP yang memiliki short code ABCD. Digit berikutnya yaitu EF sebenarnya adalah identitas tarif layanan yang didaftarkan oleh CP yang dikenali oleh mesin operator.
11. Jika anda benar-benar tidak tahu layanan apa yang pernah anda daftarkan, ketik UNREG ke short code ABCD tadi. Perintah UNREG merupakan perintah wajib yang diinstruksikan oleh semua operator ke seluruh CP yang memiliki akses ke operator tersebut untuk menghapus nomor pengguna dari semua layanan REG yang ada di CP dengan short code ABCD tadi. Jika anda telah mendapatkan reply pemberitahuan bahwa nomor anda telah terhapus dari layanan REG tersebut, tunggulah beberapa hari untuk memastikan seperti tercantum dalam tip (8). Selain UNREG, dapat pula dicoba perintah lain misalnya STOP.
12. Jika anda masih tidak berhasil berhenti berlangganan, anda harus melaporkan CP bersangkutan ke operator dimana anda berlangganan. Dengan data yang ada, cukup bagi customer service operator untuk membantu anda berhenti berlangganan. Selanjutnya tunggu seperti di tip (8).
13. Dalam beberapa kasus, ada kemungkinan pesan yang anda terima tidak mencantumkan nomor pengirim namun menggantinya dengan tulisan misalnya BIBLE dan sebagainya. Ketahui apakah setiap kali anda mendapat SMS tersebut, pulsa anda terpotong dalam nominal tertentu. Teknologi ini dinamakan Sender ID masking . Jika ini yang terjadi, maka anda akan kecewa ketika meminta bantuan ke customer service operator.
